Running back Dion Lewis is getting a knee “cleanup,” according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Lewis had surgery to repair a torn ACL back in November, but the procedure apparently required a follow-up. Lewis, who resurrected his career with the Patriots a season ago, is expected to be out for about two months and will start the season on PUP.
But that’s not all.
Tackle Sebastian Vollmer has been on the PUP list with a hip injury and is likely to stay there throughout the season, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Vollmer also had offseason shoulder surgery.
In addition to Vollmer, guard Shaq Mason broke his hand. While not as difficult to overcome for an offensive lineman as a lower body injury, the thinning depth across the Patriots‘ interior offensive line has to be a concern. Bill Belichick has been in the habit for years now of cross-training his offensive lineman, which helps negate some of the issues.
This has been an eventful offseason for the Patriots‘ training staff, and yet the prevailing thought is that the team will still be good enough to weather the storm. Even if Vollmer isn’t New England’s designated to return candidate, Marcus Cannon has played much better this preseason and knows the system well.
Well yesterday kinda sucked. Not only is Sunday Football not back, BUT now you lay this shit on me?? I think we all had our worries about Dion Lewis because he legit has not been seen at camp yet. But I for one was hopeful that he would be ready by the time Week 1 rolls around. It’s brutal that we had to wait till now to find out about this and even worst that Dion had to wait till now to get the surgery.
With this news about Dion, we have to look at the rest of the already thin running back depth to see where we are with the Patriots. It is no secret that when Dion went out last season the Patriots running back production went down. They could not run the ball and it really hurt them, especially at Denver in the AFC Championship game.
Obviously James White will be the favorite to get the most of the pass catching back reps. However, I am really hoping that undrafted rookie DJ Foster heals up quick and plays this preseason. From what I read and saw in a couple clips from mini camp, he seems like someone who could possibly fill that roll. He is very explosive and really shifty. I hope he gets on the field these last two weeks so he can make the final cuts. I would hate for a guy like that to slip through the Patriots hands because of a small injury.
Dion was not the only one on this injury report though. Loosing Vollmer for any period of time is brutal. We all know how much the line suffered last season when Vollmer and Solder were not the 2 bookends. The Patriots tackle depth is very thin already, which is why I was surprised they did not upgrade the position more in the offseason. With Vollmer out that means… *gulp* uhh ohhh…..
MARCUS CANNON OH MY GOD NOOOO!!!!!
Let’s all take a second and give out a little prayer real quick that Vollmer returns sooner rather than later.
