What a day. With Mini-Camp kicking off today, so does the “optional” part of the Patriots offseason workouts. I want to stress the word “optional” because that is what Bill Belichick did today in his pre-practice press conference. Because of Bill’s previous slant “I am only talking about the players who are here”, today was the first time the media could get any info on Quarterback Tom Brady and Tight End Rob Gronkowski skipping OTAs.
Bill seemed to play it cool and didn’t seem to show any signs of a grudge. He kept reiterating that OTAs (Optional Team Activities) were in fact optional. He talked about how it is good to have everyone back. And when asked about his relationship with Tom, that they have always had a good relationship.
And if there was any reason why you didn’t believe the multiple reports and Bill telling us Brady and Gronk were in the house, all you had to do was look at Twitter this morning and you would see the same video of Brady running up the stairs to the practice field by every member of the media who covers the team. However, only mine had a kick ass entrance song.
All the reports are that both Brady and Gronk looked like they had not skipped a beat today at practice. Brady went 4/5 in 7 on 7’s and went 11/13 in 11 on 11’s with his one incompletion being a drop by Riley McCarron. Gronk looked great today highlighted by a deep touchdown catch that got the big guy so pumped up we saw our first Gronk Spike of the season.
Enough with 12 and 87. Here are a couple of other things that stood out to me today:
- We continued to see former 49er Trent Brown line up with the first team at Left Tackle and 1st round pick Isaiah Wynn line up next to him at Left Gaurd. This is what I expected the 2nd day of the draft after the took Wynn and traded for Brown. I never though Wynn was the answer for Left Tackle and that is why the pick confused me so much. I think it is obvious how the immediately acquired all 6′ 8″ 359 lbs of Brown that they saw Wynn as an interior guy. I predicted this following the draft that this year’s line would look like this and this is how it seems like it will play out once Marcus Cannon fully recovers from injury.
Left Tackle – Trent Brown
Left Gaurd – Isaiah Wynn
Center – David Andrews
Right Gaurd – Shaq Mason
Right Tackle – Marcus Cannon
- Keeping with this year’s first-round picks, I have heard that Sony Michel has not flashed much in camp, including getting yelled at by Running Back’s Coach Ivan Fears.
Rex Burkhead and Jeremy Hill have gotten most of the snaps with the first team and have looked the best out of the group.
- Julian Edelman has looked good so far this offseason, continuing to do more and more every day.
With so much going on in mini-camp, I am going to try to keep doing these recap articles as much as I can. So keep your eyes peeled on Binge Sports and make sure to follow us on Twitter and Instagram (@BingeSports) as we will be posting highlights during the day. With that being said, I could not end this blog without sharing the best highlight of the day, which of course is a quote from Gronk himself.
